What’s Happening in New York This Fall

NYC Car Service to Events

Autumn in New York brings a packed calendar of performances, festivals, food events, conventions, and outdoor activities. From Manhattan theaters to pumpkin displays along the Hudson, there are plenty of things to do this fall whether you are visiting for a weekend or looking for something new to experience close to home.

The season is also a good time to explore beyond Manhattan. The changing leaves provide an excuse to visit parks throughout New York City or plan a longer trip into the Hudson Valley or Finger Lakes region. With so many fall activities in New York happening across different neighborhoods and destinations, planning transportation ahead of time can make it easier to fit more into your itinerary.

Catch a Fall Performance

Fall marks the beginning of another busy season for New York’s performing arts. The Metropolitan Opera opens its new season on September 22, with a new production of Verdi’s Macbeth alongside favorites such as Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

The New York City Ballet and New York Philharmonic also return in September with new productions, world premieres, and performances throughout the season. For visitors looking for an evening activity, attending a performance is an easy way to experience one of the city’s longstanding cultural traditions while exploring the restaurants and attractions surrounding Lincoln Center and other major venues. Book Broadway and concert transportation to make an unforgettable evening this fall!

Walk Through a World of Jack-O-Lanterns

For a completely different fall experience, head north to Van Cortlandt Manor for The Great Jack-O-Lantern Blaze, running September 18 through November 8. The annual event transforms the historic property into an enormous nighttime display featuring more than 7,000 carved jack-o-lanterns.

The displays include life-sized dinosaurs, a working carousel, a planetarium made from illuminated gourds, and the Headless Horseman. Lights and music accompany the pumpkin installations, creating an attraction that is particularly memorable after dark. October is especially busy, with the event open every night during the month.

New York Comic Con Returns

Pop-culture fans can make their way to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for New York Comic Con, October 8–11, 2026. The four-day event celebrates comics, gaming, anime, television, and movies, with celebrity panels, cosplay, photo opportunities, and interactive experiences.

The 2026 convention marks the 20th anniversary of New York Comic Con’s launch in 2006. This year’s Coney Island-inspired theme adds a nostalgic New York element to the convention, while spaces such as Family HQ and the Pride Lounge offer additional programming.

Explore NYC’s Food and Comedy Scenes

The New York City Wine & Food Festival returns October 15–18, 2026, with events taking place at locations around the city, including the Seaport District. More than 50 individual events bring together over 300 chefs, culinary personalities, digital creators, and entertainers.

Options range from walk-around tastings and chef-led masterclasses to intimate dinners. Visitors can purchase individual event tickets, Grand Tasting packages, or create itineraries around several events.

Comedy takes center stage in November during the New York Comedy Festival. The festival brings more than 200 comedians to iconic venues throughout New York for a series of shows. With a lineup that includes established performers such as Margaret Cho, it offers another way to spend an evening during the later part of the fall season.

See Fall Leaves Around New York

You do not have to leave New York City to enjoy fall foliage. Fort Tryon Park, the Greenbelt Nature Center, and other parks and gardens throughout the city’s boroughs provide opportunities to see autumn colors without making a long trip upstate.

Central Park is another obvious choice, but a guided Central Park Conservancy Fall Foliage Tour offers more than a walk through the park. Visitors can learn about the park’s history and horticulture while exploring its lesser-known areas and viewing the reds, oranges, and golds that typically appear during October and November.

For a longer autumn excursion, Finger Lakes Wine Country offers a combination of vineyards and fall scenery. The cool-climate wine region includes more than 100 wineries surrounding its glacier-carved lakes. Late September and October coincide with grape harvest and changing leaves, making it a popular time to visit.

Riesling is particularly associated with the Finger Lakes. A wine-focused itinerary could include stops at Buttonwood Grove Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, and Hosmer Winery while taking in the scenery around Cayuga Lake.
